Invitation to LAÓN-LAÓN 2008 The University of the Philippines Center for Ethnomusicology will hold the LAÓN-LAÓN 2008, a Forum on Music Research Centers in Asia on October 13-15, 2008 at the Sulo Hotel in Quezon City. The three-day event will include a roundtable discussion on various strategies in cultural documentation and archiving, and a technical workshop on digital conservation by Dr. Dietrich Schueller from the Austrian Academy of Science. Experts from various music and art centers for research in Asia including countries Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam shall be invited as resource persons.

Research Highlights

Linking Technology with Language and Music

A team of specialists from the University of the Philippines Diliman, specifically from the field of engineering, computer science, linguistics, speech communication, and music are working on a program that focuses on the modernization of the Filipino language and practices today. Entitled Development of Inter-disciplinary Signal Processing for Pinoy (ISIP) Program: Filipino Vowels and Emotions (FIVE), this program is headed by Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara of the U.P. College of Engineering along with project leaders Dr. Belen Calingación and Dr. Galileo Zafra from the U.P. College of Arts and Letters and Dr. Ramon Acoymo from the U.P. College of Music.
